Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that people who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People purchasing such drugs should be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a return to original mass within about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The study, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Scientists point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically have a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Doctors propose the way of the jabs accounts for the accelerated weight return.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Accounts

People who have stopped the jabs report a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger activating and you become extremely hungry," described one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if patients have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Significant Interest

Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among women than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural changes.
