No fewer than 13 passengers perish and 98 injured in rail accident in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's key public works projects.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the head of state.

The leader reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose term finished the prior year. This project was closely associated with his administration's economic goals for the southern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The development of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a notable growth of its role in civilian works. They were built at an rapid speed, defying forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had also fueled significant concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party urged an urgent pause in the development and management of all such projects.

This stoppage was suggested until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "requires immediate answers."

In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these strategic undertakings.
