Right-leaning responses to the limited disclosure of documents related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with certain supporters of the previous administration pointing out the noticeable appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in images, while different voices lamented how heavy censorship cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable light.
Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Strong Rhetoric
Administration officials justified the redactions with intense hyperbole. “At no point in U.S. the nation's history has a President or the Department of Justice been this open with the public about such a delicate legal issue,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page memo describing the redaction procedure.
Concerns Raised by Redactions
While the former president's identity and likeness are visible in some of the documents, the widespread redactions prompt serious concerns about the information may be concealed behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly demanded increased openness.
“People are raging and disengaging,” posted Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship break the law, and suggested that a future Congress may attempt to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, this file dump egregiously fails to comply with both the spirit and the wording of the act,” he added.
A Faction of Rightwing Figures Rally In Support of the Disclosure
But, some conservative commentators and former President loyalists came out strongly behind the administration.
The release—from a justice department led by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of pages that are completely redacted, and numerous of the men shown in pictures have their faces blacked out.
Yet a few are not, including prominent individuals like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, especially, allowed some rightwing figures to launch the offensive.
“It’s quite ironic how the Democrats wrongly accused President Trump of being a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a female that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one reason Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Former President Spokesperson Issues Response
Bill Clinton has consistently said he was aware of zero illegal activity by Epstein and has not been alleged to have participated in any misconduct. “The administration has not been hiding those documents for months only to dump them late on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“The release is about shielding officials from future revelations, or from information they will try and hide forever. Therefore they can publicize as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photos as they want, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the statement concluded.
Broader Rightwing Comment Seems Muted
Nonetheless, broader comment on the political right was comparatively muted after the release, particularly when compared with the vociferous demands for transparency that came before the legislative vote to enact a bill requiring the documents' release.
The commentator, who recently accepted press credentials at the Pentagon, had been among the loudest proponents for a complete disclosure. Earlier this year, she chastised the administration generally and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing personalities were given physical binders of materials that included no previously unseen data.
